WVU ATHLETICS

Let’s Go…Mountaineers! Back and forth the chant goes, across the fields of play. Beyond capturing the long, proud history of WVU Athletics and the exciting competition it represents, it also captures the spirit of our mission.

With your support and commitment, we provide our student-athletes with the tools they need to help reach their career goals. We enable them to go forward and go far in business, the sciences, healthcare, education, the arts, or whatever they choose. Competing at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics hones their bodies and their skills, while studying and learning at the highest levels academically hones their minds and shapes their futures. These are exceptional young men and women who somehow find enough hours in the day to excel at their sports and stand out in the classroom. It is not easy, and they could not do it without your generosity. For our students and for West Virginia, WVU Athletics is an exciting State of Minds.

You also have a hand in building and maintaining the quality competition and training facilities that serve our student-athletes, our alumni, our University, and all the WVU athletics fans in West Virginia and beyond. By the public nature of our student-athletes’ endeavors, their successes and challenges stand out, and their fans have high expectations each season.

We have high expectations as well. Our student-athletes can and will continue to exceed those expectations—but only with your generosity and commitment.

Winning, Today and Tomorrow

In the past year, more than 400 student-athletes were honored on the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll, seven were named Academic All-Americans, 36 were academic award winners, and three teams earned full-team academic honors. Men’s basketball had the highest team GPA in the Big East Conference, and the football team put 18 players on the Big East Academic All-Star list. Overall, WVU produced 158 Big East Academic All-Stars. Our cumulative NCAA Academic Progress Rate scores were the highest in WVU history.

Our student-athletes were equally successful on the field of play. In fact, WVU finished in the top 40 in the nation in the Director’s Cup, which tracks America’s hundreds of colleges and universities, honoring overall performance in a broad range of men’s and women’s sports. This was WVU’s fourth consecutive Top-50 finish. Mountaineer teams produced winners ranging from the NCAA Air Rifle champion to the Big East Women’s Soccer champions. Our outstanding student-athletes won 16 individual conference championships and accounted for 38 all-conference performances.

With this kind of academic and athletic success, your continued support is vital. The costs of maintaining a premier intercollegiate athletic program and an outstanding educational experience for our student-athletes are huge and growing. More than 500 student-athletes competing in 17 varsity sports require an annual budget of more than $8 million, which we must pay to the University. Your generosity enables WVU to fund scholarships to recruit and train elite student-athletes, provide quality facilities and venues, and compete with peer institutions. You make our State of Minds—in motion—possible and powerful. Your support helps give a great education and a great future to our student-athletes, and in the process creates success, excitement, and pride for our community and our state.

Priorities for Tomorrow

W VU Athletics has identified a list of essential funding priorities that, with your vital support, will enhance undergraduate student-athlete experience, education, and competition in the coming decades. As does everything at the University, they begin with our students and then go on to foster coaching excellence as well as address the quality of life in West Virginia through entertainment and excitement:

  • Facility Enhancements
  • Student-Athlete Scholarships/Operational Needs
  • Endowment Support
  • Big 12 Transition Fund
  • Planned Giving
